Obituary

Donald S. Clark, age 93, a longtime resident of Lynn, died January 31, 2015 at the Devereux House in Marblehead. Born in Malden, November 24, 1921, he was the son of the late Watson S. and Ina (Clark) Clark. He attended Malden Public Schools. As a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine, immediately following America's entry into World War II, he survived the sinking of his merchant ship the Knoxville City on June 1, 1942, by a German submarine. After being rescued by Cuban fishing boats and his return to the United States, Clark enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was assigned to the attack transport the James Ohara. He served on the Ohara in the Pacific Theatre in 1944-45, participating in multiple invasions. Clark was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the invasion of Saipan. Mr. Clark was employed as a salesman in the Lynch Paint and Pappas Beverage organizations, and, in later years, was a taxi driver in Lynn. He was an avid reader, being especially fond of the poetry of Edwin Arlington Robinson and he enjoyed listening to opera. Mr. Clark is survived by his son Thomas Clark and his wife, Hiroko of Tokyo, Japan and their children, Theresa M. Clark, Thomas H. Clark, Anna C. Clark and Julia M. Clark, as well as several nieces and nephews. He had been married to Beatrice Michaela (Tenaglia) Clark who passed away in 2013. In addition, Mr. Clark was predeceased by his older sister Connie Clark. The family will receive friends Friday, February 6 from 7-9 in the Goodrich Funeral Home, 128 Washington St., Lynn, and again on Saturday from 10:30-11:30 followed by interment with military honors in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
