IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ethelyn M.
Schutt
July 28, 2024
Attleboro, MA – Ethelyn Mae Robinson (Pettersen) Schutt, 90, known as "Robbie" and later in life as "Lynn", of Attleboro, passed away peacefully on July 28 at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, surrounded by her family. She was the widow of Richard C. Schutt. Born in Lynnfield, MA, Ethelyn Mae Robinson was the adopted daughter of the late Joseph and Emma (Alice) Robinson, of Lynn, MA, sister of the late Edna Harvey of Revere, the late Barbara Gudaitis of Beverly, the late Dana Levoy of San Antonio, Texas, the late Albert Levoy of Windham, NH, and Franklin Levoy of Stoneham, MA. Ethelyn went to Lynn Public Schools and graduated from Lynn Classical High in 1951. Three days after graduation, she started working at John Hancock Co., Inc. in Boston and worked there for three years. During that time, she married her high school sweetheart, the late Herman "Pete" Pettersen Jr., in 1953 on a weekend pass. He was stationed in Germany and home on leave. She joined him in Germany where, one year later, she gave birth to their first of seven children. Ethelyn is survived by all of her children, Lynn Alice Quincy of Epping, NH, Johanne Lee Tournas of Hampstead, NH, Lisa Mae Fuller of Fairfield, TX, Judy Ann Brown-Segal of Lynn (and husband Michael Segal), Randi Ellen Sullivan of Attleboro, Erik Joseph Pettersen of Attleboro and Kirk Alan Pettersen of Danvers. Ethelyn was predeceased by her granddaughter, Rita Marie Lutrzykowski. Known as Mama, Mom, Ma (which she hated!), Grammy and GG, Ethelyn also had 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and her family was her life! Besides being the mother of seven, Ethelyn sold Fuller Brush products door to door, then worked as a waitress for ten years at Tai Hong Restaurant in Lynn when it was owned by Norma and Johnny Yee. For fun, she had a CB radio in her car and her "handle" was "Brown Eyes"! In the early 80s, she worked at Dow Jones for a few years. While working at Tai Hong, she met Richard C. Schutt who retired after 26 years at The Lynn Item. They were married in Florida in 1985 and both worked at The Woodlands Country Club. Richard was club steward and then purchasing agent, and Ethelyn enjoyed working in the men's card room. Richard passed away in 2002 in Florida. After retiring, Ethelyn took a course in home health and cared for a woman she adored five days a week, spending weekends at home. While living in Florida, she adopted a border collie named Jake when he was a year-old pup. In 2007, she moved back to Massachusetts. Jake passed away in 2015, and she was heartbroken. He was fifteen years old and she referred to him as her "baby". Ethelyn was a parishioner and deaconess at the First Baptist Church of Attleboro. She loved to sing solos, as well as sing in the choir and serve at her church. She also helped out at the yearly yard sales, crafts, and all activities and loved to bake and cook for the church and as hospitality to share in fellowship with her neighbors at Brookside Housing of Attleboro where she lived in her later years. Ethelyn accepted, on behalf of the church, a plaque in recognition of service from Attleboro Area Interfaith Collaborative. She also volunteered at the soup kitchen "Food and Friends" on Thursdays. She was a friend to all who knew her. Her hobbies were puzzles, word search games, and making crocheted lap robes and afghans for friends, family and local nursing homes. In 2021 Ethelyn's DNA was submitted to ancestry.com where the family discovered she had three more brothers, Harvey Gersin of West Bloomfield Township, MI, Alvin Gersin of Brockton, MA, and Leonard Gersin of Cotuit, MA, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. After meeting some of her newfound family, everyone was overjoyed! She learned that her father, the late Henry Gersin, had always wanted a little girl! On January 20, 2024, she walked into her surprise 90th birthday party (photo seen here was taken on her 90th birthday), looked around the room, and all she could say through her tears was, "Wow!" Ethelyn will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
