Obituary

Lynn – Leta P. (Goodwin) Burke Littlefield, 98, of Lynn, died on Monday, February 27, 2023 at Pilgrim Health and Rehabilitation in Peabody.  She was a lifelong resident of Lynn.

She leaves her son Michael Burke and his wife Nancy of Manchester, NH, her granddaughter Kassandra (Kassie) Burke of Amherst, NH, her sister Phyllis Smith of Saugus, MA, step-son Robert and his wife Margaret Littlefield of Northridge, CA and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband of 22 years Robert Littlefield 2004, her brother Harold (Sonny) Goodwin 2016, her sister Gloria Kavanagh 2011, and her husband and father of her son, Michael J. Burke 1980.  She was born in Swampscott, MA, daughter of the late Murray and Pearl (Robertson) Goodwin and grew up in the Highlands in Lynn, MA.

Leta worked at McClellan's Department store in Lynn for 53 years, retiring when the store closed in 1994.  She worked in various positions and ultimately ran the bookkeeping office for the store.  Leta was a tireless worker and, as was her way with anything in her life, gave 100 percent of herself.

Leta enjoyed crocheting blankets, hats, and mittens for church fairs.  She worked her crochet magic and created tablecloths that she gifted to friends and family.  One of her favorite past-times though was making her delicious peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies and gifting them.

Leta enjoyed traveling to Maine and spending time at Lakeside Pines Campground with her family.  Many memories were created there including celebrating her son's birthday each year.  Leta and her friend Jerri made frequent trips to Nova Scotia to visit Leta's family. She traveled with her husband Bob to Hawaii, Florida and did a whirlwind European tour during their marriage.

Leta began attending the Washington Street Baptist Church when she was six years old and at the time of her death was a 72 year member. Leta was a diaconate, a church collector and served on several church committees including the board of Christian Education, Pastoral Relations Committee, and was a member of the Women's Association Group.

Leta was very active in the Washington Street Baptist Church and was very fond of her church family and enjoyed spending time with them.  Leta was always the first to volunteer when the call for help went out, whether it be setting up for a luncheon, preparing care packages for shut-ins or helping out at the church fair, she was always willing to help in any way she could.

At the urging of her son, Leta joined the church choir and enjoyed singing on Sundays.  Leta enjoyed teaching Sunday school and always had a craft for the children to make as part of the teaching of the week.

Leta had a special knack for being able to make something out of ordinary items that she "had laying around the house".  She enjoyed working on craft projects with her granddaughter and playing board games with her after Sunday dinner.

She lived in Germany when her first husband Mike was stationed there in the late 1950's.  She did not know any German but while there learned to speak fluently and would frequently share words that she remembered including  "as they say in Germany danke sehr ".
