Obituary

Louis Christopher "Louie" Valente, of Lynn, MA, (previously of Swampscott, MA)  died peacefully on August 7, 2023 surrounded by loving family after a lengthy illness. He was 80 years old. The family is profoundly saddened by his death. Louis was born on Malden, MA on February 1, 1943. He was a graduate, class of 1961, of Swampscott High school. In addition,  he graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, MA in 1965.  Soon after graduation he secured a
position at a prominent advertising agency located both in Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut.  In 1971 as a result of the economic recession, he returned home to Lynn. His career as an artist and graphic designer blossomed when he was chosen, in 1973, to be the Creative Director at Allyn and Bacon, Boston, MA, a major publishing company of "higher education" text books. He remained here until his retirement in 1996 at Simon & Schuster, Needham, MA (the latter purchased Allyn and Bacon in the mid-1980's). Along the way Louis received multiple awards for his "text book cover designs" and eventually rose to be the Art Director for Simon & Schuster.  Art was Louis' passion,  pride, joy, and life's work. He poured his heart and soul into his work, even being commissioned by Elizabeth Taylor to compose six portraits. And he somehow found the time to pursue another passion, acting in community theater, and in the "annual" productions of the "Passion Play", under the direction of St. Cecelia's Church in Back Bay.  He spent much of his free time traveling and introducing his mom and sister to the magical world of live musical broadway theater, opera, and ballet productions.  Quite the gourmet chef, he hosted many holiday dinners for his family, always followed by board games of Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and Bingo.  Animal lover by nature, he was always comforted by his many rescue cats. He was also the best person to ask if you ever wanted to know anything about old Hollywood. Everyone who knew Louis derived so much pleasure by his quit wit, dry sense of humor, and risqué jokes. He was full of compassion, generosity, love, sincerity, kindness, and joy…..traits that were obvious to all, even after just a single encounter with him.  Louis is predeceased by his mother Margaret "Peggy" Valente and his father Louis Dominic Valente, and by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Louis is survived by his sister Veronica Valente of Salem, his cherished niece and nephew, Brigitt Dilisio of Beverly, and Joseph Scapicchio of Salem, as well as his great nephews Louis and Nicholas Dilisio and great niece Isabella Ava Dilisio. Louis will be deeply and forever missed by all who knew him.

Contributions in memory of Louis can be made to the "MSPCA ANGELL" of Greater Boston.
