Richard Meyer Shprecher, 84, passed away on July 10, 2026, in Lynn, MA. Born on August 12, 1941, Richard's life was marked by a vibrant array of interests and a diverse career path that saw him making significant contributions in various fields.A true chess aficionado, Richard was known for his strategic prowess, often recalling his youthful days of playing in the park, including a memorable victory that he suspected was against Bobby Fischer. His love for the game was paralleled by his passion for music, film, and sports, enriching his life with joy and entertainment.
Richard attended PS 99 and Stuyvesant High School, later furthering his education at Brooklyn College and Harvard Divinity. His academic pursuits set the stage for a multifaceted career. Initially working as an Insurance Underwriter, he moved through roles as a Packaging Foreperson at American Sugar, Personnel Manager at Korvettes, a Sales Rep and Splicer at NY Telephone and a Corporate Care Rep at Cingular. Richard found his calling in pastoral work, serving as a Counselor, Pastor and Teacher from 1986 until 2021, a role that deeply connected him to his community and faith at Zion Baptist Church in Lynn, MA.
His service to the nation was marked by a three-year tenure in the Army, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of duty and resilience.
Richard is survived by his brothers, Michael and Daniel; sister, Carol; cousin, Susan; and his nieces and nephews, Ian, Jillian, David, Adam, and Lori. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Esther, and his sister Gail.
A viewing and memorial will be held at Goodrich Funeral Home, 128 Washington Ave, Lynn, MA, on July 23, 2026, at 4 pm. A veteran cemetery burial will follow on July 24, 2026, at 12:30 pm at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave, Buzzards Bay, MA. Friends and family are invited to meet directly at the cemetery for committal services.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory can be made to Zion Baptist Church of Lynn or a charity of your choice. Richard's life was marked by his passion for community, spirituality, and personal growth, leaving a lasting impact on those he met.
