Obituary

Mrs. Vera (Campbell) Grandberry, age 96, the matriarch of the family, peacefully entered eternal rest on January 9, 2024 at AdviniaCare (formerly Grosvenor Park Health Care) in Salem, MA. Vera was the third child and first girl born on June 3, 1927, in Fayetteville, NC to the late Willie James and Retha (Williams) Campbell, where she was raised and educated. Vera was a sharp dresser, humble, proud, private woman of God, who loved to attend church. She relied on God, her Savior, Jesus Christ, and her faith right up until the end of her life. She loved her family, playing bingo, playing cards, travelling, dining out, living life on her terms, and was known for cooking her famous specialty dish, potato salad.

She was married to Air Force Staff Sgt., James Grandberry until his unexpected passing on April 8, 1972. From that union, the family traveled from North Carolina to New York to Indiana then overseas living in the Philippines for several years before returning to the states in the spring of 1966 and settling in Lynn, MA, where she would remain living independently until her health started to decline in April 2015.

Vera leaves behind 4 generations: her son, James Grandberry of MA, her daughter, Brenda Rodgers and Franz Lavaud of NH. Her goddaughter, O. Virginia Harrell of GA. Grandchildren, Gina Grandberry and Todd Burton, Sr., Mark and Paula Rodgers of MA, Ebony O'Neal of OH, James Carter of MA. Great-grandson, Todd Burton, Jr., and great-great-granddaughter, Madelyn Burton of MA. A sister, Geraldine Anderson of NY as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. Vera was preceded in death by her husband James, her first born son Allen, her grandson Andre Rodgers, her siblings, James and John Henry Campbell, Helen Henderson, Ernestine Brown, and Doris Campbell.

The family would like to thank all the staff at AdviniaCare who took care of Vera over the years and during her final days including Sanna, Silas, Latoya, Inez, and Erline.

Grandma Vera will be truly missed by all who loved and knew her. Fly High Grandma, Fly High!

Vera wished to be buried with the love of her life. A graveside service will be held at her husband's military gravesite at Pine Grove Cemetery in the spring.
