Obituary

William "Bill" W. Slattery 83, beloved Father and friend, died on Sunday, July 4, 2021at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital after a brief illness.  Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late John and Edna (Morley) Slattery.  Bill grew up in Lynn and graduated from Classical High School, and later moved to Saugus where he joyfully bought his first and only home to raise his 6 children with the late Nancy (Kehoe) Slattery.  He earned a living in the automotive industry, working as a simonizing specialist for all the local dealerships and also as a Constable/Courier for the Town of Saugus.  Bill was a Mustang enthusiast and owned several 5.0 Mustang convertibles.  If you lived in Saugus, chances are you saw Bill driving by in one of his Mustangs on what he would call "a top down day"!  He taught CCD in Saugus as well Bill was a firm believer in Christ and he attended Mass EVERY Sunday regardless of where he was for 45 years!  Bill had 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, a total of 42 people.  He enjoyed a variety of pleasures and hobbies such as boating (Cool Breeze) biking, Lake Winnipesaukee, Scrabble, Jeopardy, playing and teaching guitar, watching Spongebob, celebrating his half birthdays and motorcycles.  He was proud to be part of one of the very first motorcycle groups in Lynn, The Twisters, in 1956.  He was a member of the Lynn and Saugus YMCA all of his life.  He was a true friend and often visited the elderly who were confined to Nursing Homes, took Cancer patients into Boston for treatments and often spoke of the importance of visiting and caring for the sick, the elderly and the incarcerated.  He loved to read the comics and was also a firearms enthusiast and collector.  Bill (Papa) Slattery changed the world through his kindness, his faith, his ability to make people laugh.  He had many friends and would often say "I'm a rich man, not a wealthy man, but a rich man".  He taught his family the importance of gratitude.  Bill was the very best father and friend.  He would say there is a better life beyond this one and I'll be seeing you.  Bill is survived by his daughter Sally DeCotis of Florida, son William Slattery Jr. and his wife Jolene of NH, daughter Sandra Tobin of Saugus, Scott Slattery of Lynn, his daughter in law Chandra Slattery and was the father of the late Sean Slattery and Susan Ross.  In addition, he leaves 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, a brother John Slattery of Lynn, 3 sisters, Judith Rouleau of Saugus, Juanita Phillips of Lynn and Paulette Comeau of Andover, many nieces and nephews.  He was the brother of the late James F. Slattery.  Memorial visitation will be held in the Goodrich Funeral Home, 128 Washington Street, Lynn on Monday, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  His funeral mass will be held in St. Mary's Church in Lynn on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Saugus.
